“I am Muslim; I understand Muslim law,” Mrs. Hussein said in an interview. “But I ask: what passage in the Koran says women can’t wear pants? This is not nice.”

Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld

Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld the 24-year-old son of French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld will curate another art show during fashion week. "I want to work with people of my generation so I keep on looking for talent, whether it’s in photography or any type of art and see where it might go. Every time it’s a big project to work on and I just started in this business, but I’m just trying to enjoy it." During the upcoming Fashion Week, Mr. Restoin-Roitfeld will host an exhibition along with Andy Valmorbida of works by Richard Hambleton, best known for his shadow paintings from the ’80s, in collaboration with Giorgio Armani on Sept. 15. His mother told the Daily Transom at her son's show in February: "I don't know if he will do more shows or film, but when you try to produce things, it's a hard hard job, and I'm very proud of him. I'll be very happy if he becomes successful." -Irina Aleksander, The New York Observer

An Islamic court in Malaysia on Tuesday indefinitely put on hold the caning of a woman found guilty of drinking beer. -VIJAY JOSHI Associated Press
“I read in The New York Times this week that I'm an ice queen, I'm the Sun King, I'm an alien fleeing from District 9 and I'm a dominatrix," the Vogue editor joked. "So I reckon that makes me a lukewarm royalty with a whip from outer space. What do you think?” -Anna Wintor

Muslim fashion model in Malaysia will be caned after pleading guilty to drinking beer

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A Muslim part-time fashion model will be caned next week, becoming the first woman in Malaysia to be given the punishment under Islamic law, after she pleaded guilty to drinking beer, a prosecutor said Wednesday. An Islamic court in July ordered that Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, be lashed six times with a rattan cane after she was caught drinking alcohol in a raid on a hotel night club in eastern Pahang state last year. Prosecutor Saiful Idham Sahimi said Kartika will be the first woman to be caned under Islamic law after she chose not to appeal the sentence. "This is the first case in Malaysia. ... It is a good punishment because under Islamic law a person who drinks commits a serious offense," he said. -JULIA ZAPPEI Associated Press

TYRA Banks the model-turned-talk-show host stopped by the Peas n' Pickles convenience store in Brooklyn Heights with financier boyfriend John Utendahl and picked up more than 20 frozen dinners and a dozen energy bars. "She bought $130 worth of food, which they had to ring up item by item," laughs our spy. "Her boyfriend paid for everything with his AmEx Black Card." -PAGE SIX, NY Post

Opening Ceremony

Opening Ceremony has jumped to Japan, and brought American stars with it for the grand opening. The Olsen twins came dressed as Manga characters in bunny ears, Kirsten Dunst channeled a Harajuku girl.
-Daily Beast A dead body was found yesterday on the roof above Opening Ceremony, an ultra-hip fashion emporium/design space. A tipster tells us that an Opening Ceremony staffer made the grisly discovery yesterday during a smoke break, along with a bunch of other salacious details that may or may not be true. But the NYPD confirmed that the body of a white male was indeed found yesterday at 35 Howard St., which is Opening Ceremony's address. They declined to provide any other details, saying the investigation is ongoing. A manager at Opening Ceremony said they'd get back to us. -John Cook, Gawker

The September Issue

(NEW YORK) The premiere of Vogue documentary The September Issue will be arguably one of the most exclusive fashion events of the year--along with Anna Wintour's other parties, that is. So when director R.J. Cutler, Roadside Attractions, and A&E Indie Films fĂȘte the film next Wednesday, expect the attendees to be a veritable who's who of chicsters. Wintour, Grace Coddington, Andre Leon Talley, Sienna Miller, Oscar de la Renta, and Thakoon Panichgul--all of who make appearances in The September Issue--will be in attendance for the first major screening. As for the non-appearing (camera-shy perhaps?)? Sean Combs, Amy Astley, Tory Burch, Patrick Demarchelier, Frederic Fekkai, Carolina and Reinaldo Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Phillip Lim, Rachel Roy, Melania and Donald Trump, Alexa Chung, Carey Mulligan, Mark Badgley and James Mischka, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Zac Posen, and Jason Wu are all slated to come out for the screening. Our favorite name on the guest list, however, has to be SI Newhouse. He may not make it out party-hopping among the fashion set very often, but after all, hasn't Graydon said Uncle SI on the town is great fun? The actual September issue of Vogue may not have hit newsstands yet - but who needs it when you have this much juice? -Fashion Week Daily
