Caroline Giuliani's case set for dismissal in NYC

NEW YORK - Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's daughter is on track to get her cosmetics-store shoplifting case dismissed with a day of community service. A Manhattan judge adjourned Caroline Giuliani's case Tuesday in contemplation of dismissal. It means the case will be closed and sealed if Giuliani completes the volunteer work and stays out of trouble for six months. The Manhattan district attorney's office says that's the outcome of the vast majority of first-time, low-dollar-value shoplifting arrests - not a special deal for the daughter of the former federal prosecutor who became a law-and-order mayor. The 21-year-old Harvard University student was arrested Aug. 4 on charges of pocketing about $100 worth of makeup at a Sephora store. - Associated Press

Madonna Slapped with Material Girl Lawsuit

NEW! Material Girl Tube Tops - Strapless Bandeau Bra $5.00 Mix and match! Layer these Material Girl bandeau bras under just about anything to give your outfit an extra edge!Talk about a fashion don’t! Madonna is being sued over the rights to use the “Material Girl” name for the trendy juniors clothing line that she designed with daughter Lourdes. Apparel manufacturer LA Triumph slapped the superstar with a lawsuit Thursday, claiming that it had been marketing clothes under the “Material Girl” brand since 1997. “Our client and its predecessor have been continually selling similar clothes in similar retail outlets at similar price points under their Material Girl brand since at least 1997 and Madonna and her newfound company do not have the right to trade in the same space under this brand,” said an attorney with firm One LLP, alleging that their client faces “a risk of being subsumed by Madonna’s profile, obvious worldwide notoriety” and massive marketing campaign. Madonna’s much-buzzed-about Material Girl collection, fronted by Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen, launched at Macy’s earlier this month. Madonna has not yet commented. –Gillian Koenig People Magazine

Simon Doonan - Nobody wants to co-brand with Snooki.

Famous Fashion Designers are not sending her their own famous bags. They are sending her each other's famous bags! Competitors' famous bags! Call it what you will — "preemptive product placement"? "unbranding"? — either way, it's brilliant, and it makes total sense. As much as one might adore Miss Snickerdoodle, her ability to inspire dress-alikes among her fans is questionable. The bottom line? Nobody in fashion wants to co-brand with Snooki. - Simon Doonan

Fashion big wig pushed in front of R train

EXCLUSIVEA drunken madman tried to kill a fashion-industry honcho by shoving her into the path of a Manhattan subway train in a chilling, unprovoked attack, the victim and police told The Post yesterday. "As the impact happened, I'm thinking, 'I'm going to be dead,' " Hell's Kitchen resident Ute Linhart, 39, said of Wednesday evening's random attack in the 28th Street R-train station. "Then I realized that I was in so much pain, I couldn't possibly be dead."

Should babies wear skinny jeans?

The idea of shimmying into a pair of skinny jeans makes many women cringe. Now imagine squeezing them up over a diaper. Ava Lane, a smiley two-year-old who lives in Deland, Fla., has four pairs of skinny jeans. She received the first pair as a gift, says mom Christina Lane, who thought they looked so cute she bought more. - ELIZABETH HOLMES, The Wall Street Journal

Naomi Campbell and Charles Taylor

British supermodel Naomi Campbell, testifying at the war crimes trial of former Liberian President Charles Taylor, said on Thursday she had been given a pouch containing small, rough diamonds while in South Africa but did not know who they were from. Complaining that having to appear in court was a "terrible inconvenience," Campbell said two unidentified men came to her bedroom after she attended a charity dinner with Taylor and then South African President Nelson Mandela in 1997. "I was sleeping and had a knock at the door that woke me up. Two men were there and they gave me a pouch and said: 'A gift for you'," she told the U.N. Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague. "I went back to bed. I looked into the pouch the next morning," the model said. "I saw a few stones, they were very small, dirty looking stones." "I'm used to seeing diamonds in a box ... If someone had not said they were diamonds, I would not have known they were diamonds," she said. Prosecutors summoned Campbell to support their allegations that Taylor received so-called "blood diamonds" from rebels in Sierra Leone and used them to buy weapons during his 1997 trip to South Africa. Taylor has denied the allegations as "nonsense." He is charged with 11 counts of instigating murder, rape, mutilation, sexual slavery and conscription of child soldiers during wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone in which more than 250,000 people were killed. He denies all the charges. - Reuters

Retail News

NEW YORK - Rudy Giuliani's daughter was arrested Wednesday on a misdemeanor shoplifting charge at a beauty supplies store after she was seen on security video pocketing makeup, police said. Caroline Giuliani, a 20-year-old Harvard University student, was seen taking five items worth more than $100 at a Sephora store in Manhattan, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said. Store managers, after calling police, said they didn't want to press charges against her, Browne said. But police arrested her on a petty larceny charge, he said. Giuliani, wearing black pants and a red sweater and with her arms folded, exited a police precinct Wednesday evening and quickly got into an SUV with her mother. She did not respond to reporters' questions.

Russell Brand

Russell Brand had a dudes' night out with "How To Make It in America" actor Luis Guzman at Avenue on Sunday. They arrived about 2 a.m., their attire catching the eye of every woman in the room. "Brand was wearing a white tank and a dark, fishnet-looking vest, jeans and cowboy boots with heels. He resembled a rock 'n' roll Jesus," said a witness. Guzman's orange shirt with doves and peace signs all over it was just as magnetic. Our spy said, "Girls were throwing themselves all over Brand" -- who's engaged to pop singer Katy Perry -- "but he ignored them." - NY Post
